    Fontes 13th century church

Although Fontes has only 900 inhabitants, it has all the essentials. A wonderful bakery, butchery, pharmacy, two hair dressers, tabac (newspapers and magazines etc) bar, winery (huge), a doctor, post office (morning only) and a lovely old church.

The market comes to Fontes on Wednesdays and Fridays and, in addition the Mayor’s office announces when fresh produce (shell fish, sea food, vegetables, fruit and specialties) are available in the main street via a tannoy (speaker) system.

Fontes is buried in the famous Midi wine growing area, with vineyards surrounding the entire village. In fact winegrowing is the main occupation. It is situated on the sun drenched flanks of the Cevenne Hills.

Fontes main street

It is a pretty and very friendly village with a “bonjour” in the street being rewarded by a big smile.
